The Irony of Happiness

-THE PREVIOUS POST 'THE LETTING GO' HAS BEEN UPDATED -

After reading the previous post, a friend said to me (that which he was once told) the following:

You have to let go of the happiness when it still is happiness; that is the only way to preserve it. Sometimes we hold on to little bits of life hoping it would never change but the more we hold on the more it changes, and then it turns into something which is exactly the opposite to what we had. But we still hold on, and that is the memory and pain we are left with

These words have been drifting around my mind since. As I lay in bed, I took advantage of absorbing the 3am sort of silence ... the kind thats marked by more than just the absence of sound...the kind of silence in which I can actually hear the pulsation of the world around me...thats what it felt like. And these words came back to me...I can't expand on them any more than they are self explainitory.

And then I thought - If only I had known them earlier...now they're something I'll never forget

"You hold the answers deep within your own mind.
Consciously, you've forgotten it.
That's the way the human mind works.
Whenever something is too unpleasant, to shameful for us
to entertain, we reject it.
We erase it from our memories.
But the imprint is always there.
Nothing is ever really forgotten"

Yes, happiness is ironic and I think for many reasons. Nothing last forever and happiness is no exception. I can't say I know how to let go of happiness, but even if we don't it is eventually taken form us. If we understand the true nature of everything then unhappiness is easier to deal with. The answer is never in trying to forget but in understanding what we had. As you quoted:

We erase it from our memories.
But the imprint is always there.
Nothing is ever really forgotten.

Think not of the faults of others, of what they have done or not done. Think rather of your own sins, of the things you have done or not done.

nice quote there jnana. That philosophy seems to become a certain weakness of mine ... where I somehow bring myself down in the quest of givin another the benefit of the doubt. I rather think of my own flaws...cuz thats the only thing I can change...myself...not others.

Ah yes, I've been placed in similar situations lately, where i had to decide whether to let go of the happiness i had at present in order to preserve future happiness. It's sad indeed, but must be done. In the end, the only happiness one can find is within oneself. No one can ever depend on another human being for their happiness, because people change throughout time. The only thing we can control and change in our lifetime is ourselves.

We can only change our views, our reactions, our attitudes and ourselves. Thats freal :) You've been listening to a good friend I see :p ... aww... You knew this inside all along. We all do.

Sometimes it takes other ppl and bad experiences to learn whats wrong in the 1st place....but only we have the power to do what we must do in the end. As HARD as it iz.

happiness turns to bitterness, true, but we should never give up just because the times are hard. if we were to run away everytime the sky turns grey, you'll never see the rainbow after the storm's passed.

Yes Lummie...I agree that we should not give up @ the 1st sign of a challenge. Its not about giving up... or giving in. Its about being able to allow urself to let go...when u need. Maybe this 'letting go' is whats needed to really hold on.
